What I believe
The purpose of Education is a subject of much debate. Some teachers believe that the goal of Education is to prepare students for the workforce. Some believe that Education is meant to be a lifelong skill, and we can only ever teach students how to learn. I believe both of these are true, but I believe the primary purpose of education is nothing more or less than changing the world for the better. I understand that’s a lofty goal, but I believe it wholeheartedly.
My goal as an educator is to provide a safe space for young minds to grow, so they can go about finding ways to improve our broken world. There’s so much hate and misinformation out there today. I believe the classroom is where we break down prejudice, and begin to truly see other points of view. The only way to fight hate is through education. People primarily fear what they don’t understand. The only way to fix that is by creating a space where all voices are equally valued and love flourishes. I truly believe the best place to begin that process is in our schools. I believe a classroom should be a microcosm of the world we wish to see. Fair, egalitarian and enjoyable to inhabit. Who I am & Why I teach
The reason I decided to become a teacher in the first place was because of my experience in theatre. As a child I was always on the fringe of my class, and was often easily overlooked by many in the search to find friends. It wasn’t until joining theatre that I began to know who I was. I want to become a teacher to give that back. I believe we create the best educational environment possible by giving kids a space to discover who they are. To learn the power they have to change the world.
